On November 19, 2008 I received a phone call from Vladimir, UN9LW, who was surprised to find out from the website for Kazakh radio amateurs that we are going to Maldives. He told me that by chance they are also going to the same island about one week earlier to take part in the annual CQ WW contest which is due for November 29-30.

Their team will be 3 operators including UA9CDC who reportedly has already been to the island several times and has learnt specifics of operating from there very well. Their team will work on most of the main HF bands utilizing 3-band Yagi and vertical GPs for LF bands and QRO. The team will be there for about 2 weeks so our operation will coincide with theirs for almost a week.

To minimize possible interference we are looking at choosing accomodation at the opposite side of the island. Since our main focus is to have a good 'beach-type' vacation and radio comes in only secondary, we believe we won't have too many issues with neighboring Hams operating on HF. On the other hand it's good to have a few other Ham souls and hands around since they may be come in handy should we need help in raising antennas or solving other technical issues.

Anyway, we won't be alone and that makes life easier! (or, more difficult?) Laughing
